[Auckland, New Zealand] – A young Tuvaluan woman twirls around during a storytelling dance from Nanumea, her atoll of origin. Her performance is part of Celebrate Pasifika, a month of performances in March to pay tribute to Pasifika culture. Over 175,000 Pacific Islanders live in the Auckland region, and the Pasifika festival attracts crowds surpassing 200,000.

[Fianarantsoa, Madagascar] – While on a village home-stay in Madagascar, I often attracted crowds of local children. One evening, I brought out my camera, and they all started vying for my attention. These children juggled limes while singing a little song.

[Brussels, Belgium] The summer flowers have gone and the outdoor café tables are damp with rain, but the cold months in Brussels have their charms. In this shot, taken at the end of October, the evening lights come out to play on the stones of the glistening square.

[Arusha, Tanzania] While studying abroad with the International Honors Program, my group spent two weeks living in a Maasai community in northern Tanzania. During a wedding ceremony, my host brother (pictured) decided that he was going to be the event's de facto photographer.

[Prague, Czech Republic] – Walking in the bitter cold, I heard what sounded like folk music emanating from Prague’s main square. I caught the last 30 seconds of the performance and got the shot just in the nick of time. About five minutes later, the sky went gray and it started to snow!

[Seoul, South Korea] While walking in Samcheong-dong, Seoul, I encountered these two Koreans, both artists. I thought they would be the perfect subjects for current fashion trends here in Korea. Vests seem to be rising in popularity, especially among young men. Coupled with a regular T-shirt, the combination makes an interesting play on the contradiction between business and casual. Even though it was a cloudy day, the man in the foreground wore sunglasses, perhaps a nod to Italian and European influences. Few men sport un-shaven faces, but some have very thin mustaches and light, sculpted facial hair.

[Harajuku, Japan] Being young in Japan means showing the world what you're made of. These young ladies were performing on the famous Harajuku Bridge on a beautiful Monday afternoon. With a huge, cheering crowd surrounding them, they danced their hearts out to original songs until the police escorted them away for not having performance licenses.

[Dzodze, Ghana] – The Dzodze village family parades behind its chief toward the village center, where a festival and fundraiser will take place. In Dzodze, a rural area of Ghana, the children of one family are regarded as the children of the entire village. Family is an extremely important institution in Ghana, and unlike in the United States, children continue living with their families much longer, helping to support them. The Ghanaians in this photograph are wearing traditional clothing, which is considered appropriate dress for attending and participating in festivals. The older men carry staffs, a symbol of their age and wisdom.

[Gao, Mali] I took this photo from a small canoe in northern Mali. I was with two Songhia men, searching for hippopotamus south of Gao in the Niger river. At midday, the hippos were showing us nothing more than distant bubbles. This woman immediately caught my eye as she sat in the mud, washing away in a proud, confident, meditative state, ignoring our presence completely.
