Here is some packing advice for the mist-shrouded Jinotenga region of Nicaragua (or any cool, rainy place, for that matter). I am stealing the line from Grant of Rivendell Bicycle Works: "Wear what sheep wear." And that is wool. In Jinotenga, it rains off and on most days, and today it just poured. It gets rather cool here as well. Traveling in Central America I go from hot places to cool and rainy places quite a bit. Wool is great because it keeps you warm even if it is wet. It dries quickly when it does get wet. You can wear the same wool socks over and over and they never seem to stink. Wool keeps you warm when it is cold and keeps you cool when it is hot. It does this because it is natural and it breathes.
