Certainly the most efficient mode of transportation in Amsterdam is riding a bike. It's also one of the ways to best distance oneself from tourists and to feel (or pretend to be) Dutch. In my second week in Amsterdam, I was initiated into Dutch society with my first cement nose-dive and bike-induced nose bleed. After the incident I considered a helmet, but in the Netherlands helmet wearers are considered overly defensive and rude. Mimicking Amsterdamers as best I could, I decorated my handlebars with tulips, texted while biking, and learned that I had the right of way always. Monstrous schools of bikes can be overwhelming at first, but dive in--it's worth it!
