This was one of the most difficult parts of my trip--the border crossing in all takes about 36 hours (includes an overnight train). It's much easier to fly from Hong Kong or Macau to Hanoi, Vietnam. BUT, if you are determined to stick to overland travel (like me) and/or you have very little money (like me) then this is a great option..... 1) Hong Kong (Hong Hum station, accessible by MTR) to Guangzhou 2) Change train stations at Guangzhou, I believe it's from the Guangzhou station to the Guangzhou East station 3) Guangzhou to Nanning (tickets can be purchased in Hong Kong) 4) Naning to Pingxiang (tickets purchased in Naning) 5) Taxi to border crossing 6) On the Vietnam side of the border, taxi to Dongdan train station 7) Dongdan to Hanoi
