When you fly into La Paz you land not in the city of La Paz proper, but in the neighboring El Alto. The altitude can make you dizzy, so it's good to have a plan. There are taxis waiting right outside the airport. You should be able to get an official airport taxi outside the international terminal, and that taxi will take you anywhere in La Paz for about 50 bolivianos, which is around $7.50. If you want to save your bolivianos, you can get all the way into town for 3.80 Bs, about 60 cents. Walk one lane beyond the taxi stand and there will be a minibus or trufi that goes into La Paz, and can drop you off at Calle Sagarnaga, where a lot of hostels are located. It's not door-to-door, but a good deal if you know where you need to go.
