Mochi is a pounded rice cake found in soups, desserts, and enjoyed just by itself. It's a little sticky and chewy. Dango, a popular grilled version of it is quite delicious. Mochi comes in many different colors: It's often just white but can be pink, purple, black... you get the idea.

Mochi also comes in various filling flavors, sometimes creamy, sometimes atzuki. The creamy flavors are usually associated with the fruit that the area is known for, such as in Aomori, you’ll find different apple variations and Fukushima, peach. Atzuki is a type of bean that is mashed up and mixed lightly with some kind of sweetener becoming a red, sticky paste. I enjoy atzuki because it’s sweet but not to overwhelmingly sweet.
