The Longest Day of the Year
Today is the longest day of the year--which for me, living in northern Iceland, is a little confusing. Since "today" has lasted more or less since a month ago. Night-time during June has been little more than one extended sunset lingering over the fjord.
Still, I thought I'd celebrate by taking a stroll down to buy an ice cream. I stopped by the harbor on my way back, and spotted several young guys playing golf on a deserted pier. They weren't exactly experts (the empty beer cans surrounding them couldn't have helped) but still it was nice to watch them attempting to drive the ball as far towards the orange horizon as they could hit it.
I have gotten used to sleeping in the light. I'm not sure whether that's a useful talent or not--I haven't been able to think of any situation where it might really impress some people. Probably not a good party trick. But I have also grown accustomed to the singular pleasure of being able to walk out my door at midnight and go for a stroll in a twilight filled with the twittering songs of happy birds.
