Zurich's Fall From Grace
Well, Zurich, Switzerland has just fallen from grace. It is no longer #1 on the Mercer Scale of the city with the highest quality of life in the world. It is #2. How disappointing.
All I can say is, it must have been the weather that caused Vienna to overtake Zurich as the best place in the world to live this year. After all, Zurich had non-stop fog for about six months and no amount of punctual public transport can conquer that kind of gloom.
Still, Switzerland has three cities (Zurich, Geneva, and Bern) in the top 10 and you can’t beat that. The place is clean, orderly, safe and beautiful. You get what you pay for. And no matter what I think sometimes about the lack of smile-filled streets, people are definitely internally satisfied with their way of life and that’s what counts.
Apparently, the USA doesn’t even register as a great place to live until you get to city #29 in the list, which is Honolulu. My hometown, Chicago, was tied at #44 with Lisbon, Osaka, and Washington DC. (They obviously didn’t count availability of deep-dish pizza as a determining factor in the survey.)
Still, no matter where your city ranks on the Mercer report, one thing is clear: you can’t beat the place you call home.
