Grand Cavern

December 27, 2009 @ 9:42 PM | Permalink

(endFEB2009)“Want to go to the Grand Cavern?” I asked my travel companion, after we had finished taking in the breathtaking serenity that the top of Wayna Picchu has to offer.

“Sure,” he replied.

Little did we know that the hike to the ‘grand cavern’ would lead us on a wild trek through the backside of the mountain, taking us hours out of our way from the beginning of the trail, and bringing us to what is surely the least grand of caverns in existence.

We had to scale sections of the rock mountain, holding on to a metal wire, and lean out towards the open sky. We had to climb down old wooden ladders, and steps after steps after steps. The trek seemed to be a never-ending array of uphill-downhill step climbing and descending, as we followed the trail around the other side of the mountain. Finally, after what felt like days of trekking, after depleting all of our water sources, and after being covered in sweat, mud, and rain, we reached the grand cavern.

It was tiny, and completely UNbreathtaking. And we stayed for about five minutes solely to document some pictures since we wanted something to show for the ridiculous hike we had just completed.

But, the best part of the entire adventure was yet to come. We began to hike the slippery steps as it took us up and down and up and down and up and down, to, what we thought we be just about the end of the trail. But, to our dismay, we ended up almost hiking to the top of Wayna Picchu again, when the trail from the Grand Cavern finally met the other trail!

And this is why signs can be misleading.
