The Most Beautiful Place in the World
(endFEB2009)
We had already hiked the long and steep path that had been carved into the mountain centuries ago by the Mayans that lead to the top of Wayna Picchu. The journey upwards seemed a never ending array of slippery steps with no rail to keep one from falling off. But we kept climbing as the misty rain dampened our hot faces and kept the mud fresh enough so our slips were sure to leave ever-lasting stains. We even scaled the near-vertical wall of terracing near the top, continuing our climbing of the ages-old, slick steps, wondering if the next one should hold.
The top was deliriously breathtaking. I was surrounded by nothing but clouds, beautiful blue mountains, and more clouds. Machu Picchu was below me as the misty, thin, and foggy clouds swam through the mountain range around me like lazy fish down a tranquil river. It is a sight that I will never forget, and surely worth the hours long hike. I was on top of the world. And the tears streamed down my face as I realized that I had never seen, nor may I never see again, something as so wonderful, pristine, and historical, as I would being in the top of the Andes watching the mountains around me.
