5/25- St. Petersburg, Russia
I took the metro to the hostel to meet my tour group. If possible this hostel was sketchier than the first...it was above a sex shop.... The group went to Cafe Idiot for dinner, really good food, they gave us free shots of vodka--they tasted like gasoline/hand sanitizer. I had a flashback to my roommate at GW, Madina from Kazakhstan, telling me that Americans don't know how to drink real Russian vodka. She's right, that stuff is intense.
I'm the youngest person in the tour group and one of two Americans. Everyone else is from the UK, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Germany, etc. The group started with the anti-Bush/American remarks almost immediately. I feel the need to defend the US, especially when people criticize Americans or call them stupid or uneducated.
My last day in St. Petersburg I visited the Railway Museum. The museum didn't have an English signs, so I bought a brochure in English, still not much information... One woman followed me from room to room to make sure I didn't touch anything. I had to buy a photo pass to take pictures on top of the ticket and the brochure. Afterwards I walked to the Hermitage, supposedly the best museum in the world. It is in the Winter Palace, which already makes it incredible. The Hermitage was incredible, I could have spent days in there. I can't imagine living in a place like that....
