5/20/2008 St. Petersburg, Russia

November 18, 2009 @ 10:48 AM | Permalink

The woman working at the front desk called the airport and arranged to have my bag dropped off.  Thank god.  Today I went on the walking tour of St. Petersburg recommended in Lonely Planet.  I walked a few miles on Nevsky Prospect which included Kazan Cathedral, Stroganov Palace, Bankovsky Most, the Catherine the Great statue, and the Anichkov Most.

I didn't realize that St. Petersburg is as far north as Oslo, Stockholm, and Helsinki--no wonder I'm the only one in sandals!  It stays light out until midnight...  No one really smiles, and no one haggles in the streets either.

I think it's ironic that I am visiting so many communist countries when I am the product and promoter of laissez-faire capitalism.  I have respect for different systems.  The fact that capitalism has succeeded may just be a coincedence, while data and economics back it up, we invented the system and the rules, so of course we call it a success.
