Festa Junina

Throughout the past month we have encountered many Festa Junina parties- festivals celebrating rural life and thankfulness for the rain (June generally marks the end of the rainy season). It seems like every neighborhood has their own. Typical Northeastern Brazilian food is served and folk dancing (similar to square dancing) is a central focus of the celebration. Dance troupes from a variety of neighborhoods perform to make a little bit of money. We have eaten corn cakes, hominy porridge, and shrimp soup (tacacá).
Last night, Fundação Esperança had its own festa junina party. It was a fundraiser for their community health programs. Nathan and I danced with 20 other staff in the quadrilha (a theatrical dance centered around a small town wedding). Apparently a fun twist on the traditional quadrilha is to have men and women dress as their opposites. I donned a straw hat and sewed ribbon to my pants and Nathan dolled himself up with borrowed clothes and hair. I think our dance was a hit, both for its costumes and for how much we did not know what we were doing!
