Jesus March
I have attended marches in the past, but I think they were always voicing an opinion against something: war, rape, police brutality. On Saturday I walked several kilometers with thousands of citizens of Santarém in their annual “March for Jesus.” Many churches come together for the event- mostly evangelical. It was a very celebratory event and was a nice change from the feelings I usually associate with marches (i.e. tension because of individuals along the sidelines displaying their opposing opinions).
In the US it is possible that I would have had very different emotions about such a march. But, I am new here. I do not know their church politics, or their exact theology (and what parts I might disagree with). I just know the kindness we have been shown by the friends we were with and the sincere happiness they freely display.
Eventually my flip-flops could not flop against the pavement anymore because one had broken, my clothes were drenched with sweat and rain, and my feet ached enough to send me home. The march and celebration continued for several more hours.
