The Rugby Game

Last Saturday I went to the South Africa versus Australia rugby game. It was so amazing. We were able to get tickets in the standing section. The energy in the stadium was incredible. South Africa is ranked number one in the world right now for rugby followed closely by Australia and New Zealand. It was really fun to be a part of something that instills such national pride. Everyone was into the game, even me who had no idea what was going on. Everyone was in green, one of South Africa’s colors. Everyone was cheering and doing the wave. I have never seen the wave work as many times around a stadium as I did there. People had signs that a local newspaper printed. In South Africa newspapers put up signs on street light posts all over town with the biggest headlines. It’s kind of cool because it allows one to have some sort of idea about what is going on in Cape Town without having to read the paper. Anyways so these signs that one of the newspapers made were all over the stadium. They are just paper on cardboard, very simple but to the point. It was fun to hear the South African national anthem. I think that it was in Afrikaans, but I don’t know. What I do know is that it was not in English. Everyone was singing the anthem, which was cool to hear. I enjoyed the game immensely. I eventually did get tired of standing, but it was worth it. I enjoyed being in a place where English was not most people’s first language. Throughout the game I heard people talking in many different languages. That is one thing I love about Cape Town, it is very diverse in that sense. There are many different cultures in Cape Town. The rugby game was a highlight.
