A few things Costa Ricans do better
Have your parents tried using “the trash man” as a means of encouragement for you to attend college? Because here in Costa Rica I would imagine it would be the exact opposite. I have never seen such a fun job. I mean sure the garbage emits a rather putrid scent, there are no cultural differences there, but they’ve made it into a game, really. Two men stand on the back of the garbage truck, which looks rather similar to our own. As the truck drives down the street they hop off and run from house to house grabbing garbage bags and hurling them into the back of the still moving truck. The fun part is trying to keep up with the truck. This requires darting in and out of traffic and intersections and dodging pedestrians.
The other thing ticos do better is Mother’s Day. Día de la Madre is today, August 15th. It is basically Christmas for anyone that has popped one out. Everyone gives the moms presents, not just their own children. The moms give each other presents, the nieces give their aunts presents, the grandchildren give their grandmothers presents, the sisters give their brothers’ wives presents, the second cousins three and a half times removed give their second cousins’ great aunts presents, and so forth. It’s a good country to be a mom in. Maybe that’s why they have a problem with teen pregnancy.
