Lumbini - Taking Refuge in an Ancient Prayer

January 29, 2010 @ 12:50 AM | Permalink

One of the first steps in becoming a student of Tibetan Buddhism is taking refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha - that is committing yourself to follow the great teacher, his holy teachings, and to join the community of enlightened masters and aspiring students.

Often, the refuge prayer is recited in its ancient Pali form:

Buddham Saranam Gacchami - I take refuge in the Buddha

Dhammam Saranam Gacchami - I take refuge in the Dharma

Sangham Saranam Gacchami - I take refuge in the Sangha

On my recent visit to Lumbini for a Tibetan prayer festival, the Pali version of this prayer resounded from the tent that hosted the final gathering honoring His Holiness Sakya Trizin.

See if you can make out the prayer in the background.
