Top 3 Weird Things About Being Home
As I'm typing this, snow is slowly drifting down onto Boston's streets. I arrived here late on New Year's Day for a short (week-long) visit back to the U.S. and it's been great to be back. That said, lots of things strike me as weird about being in the U.S. now.
Here are the top three things that stood out right away (other than the snow):
-I can understand what people around me are saying. I know this seems obvious but I've gotten so used to background conversations being meaningless that it's shocking to unintentionally eavesdrop in on someone on the subway. At first, I kept thinking that everyone was talking to me.
-We went to the supermarket and the range of spices and ingredients was incredible to me. I walked up and down the aisles in a daze realizing that I could cook all sorts of food if I wanted to. The downside was that in comparison to the Greek farmer's markets all the produce looked fake and plastic.
-People don't touch each other nearly as much here as they do in Greece. I don't think I've ever spent 24 hours in Athens without a stranger patting me on the back or grabbing my arm at some point. However, that also might be because I don't understand everything they're saying so they occasionally need to physically move me.
BONUS OBSERVATION: On my flight from Athens they made all announcements in English and Greek. When we landed, the Greek flight attendant said (in Greek) "We have arrived in New York. Happy New Year! May it bring you much joy, happiness, love and success. Thank you so very much for flying with us."
The same announcement in English was "We've arrived at Terminal 4."

When I studied abroad in Greece Aegina was the first island I visited and I was told, much like you, that it wasn't really worth the visit. I was glad ...
Hilarious.
