New Year's in Crete

January 11, 2010 @ 12:46 AM | Permalink

Before too much time goes by, I thought I'd share a bit about what a New Year's celebration looks like in Iraklio, Crete's biggest city.

One of Iraklio's central squares was set up as a carnival complete with a live band playing traditional Cretan music, a lit-up Christmas tree, games like Whack-a-Mole, and even an ice-skating rink.

Iraklio was definitely pushing the boundaries of how warm the weather could be and still support an ice rink. It was getting pretty slushy out there. From the fact that nearly everyone was crawling along the fence, I'm guessing Cretans don't get a lot of ice-skating practice.

The carnival also featured a number of dioramas showing traditional Greek holiday scenes, like this one where three bald men eat cookies with a bear.

Of course, it wouldn't be a celebration without some dancing! Here, some of Iraklio's finest young male and female dancers donned traditional outfits and put on quite a show. The dances were really exciting, lots of jumping into the air and slapping of feet and thighs. I might have to look into some dance lessons before I leave Greece...

When I studied abroad in Greece Aegina was the first island I visited and I was told, much like you, that it wasn't really worth the visit. I was glad ...

Hilarious.
