Greek Birthdays

February 2, 2010 @ 3:20 PM | Permalink

I turned 23 in Greece and it was a blast!

The teachers in my department surprised me with a chocolate cake and everybody sang "Happy Birthday" in English and Greek. It was such a nice gesture and totally unexpected. I also love the Greek Birthday song which includes some interesting lyrics along the lines of "I hope you get grey hair."

A couple other things are different about birthdays in Greece. For example, on your birthday in Greece you bring sweets in to school or work. I brought some mini American candy bars and gave them out to my students. All the kids wished me "Chronia polla" or "Many years."

Then, instead of your friends taking you out for dinner, you take your friends out. At first this seems like a negative, but I like this tradition a lot. I think it shifts the focus from expecting everyone to make your day perfect (and the often awkward surprise party) to a chance to say thanks to all the people you care about and start a new year together.

So for everyone that can't be here for dinner tonight, thanks for being a part of my life!

When I studied abroad in Greece Aegina was the first island I visited and I was told, much like you, that it wasn't really worth the visit. I was glad ...

Hilarious.
