Czech/English Lesson 101

September 15, 2009 @ 2:10 PM | Permalink

"Do you sell rubbing alcohol?" I asked the woman behind the pharmacy counter.

I encountered a blank stare and was immediately overcome with a slight panicky feeling. This was sure to mark my first solo-experience with a complete non-English speaker in Prague; no Czech friends to help translate or menu option to point to.

I made a “slicing” motion with my right hand across my left bicep.

"For cuts? Open wounds? To heal? Rubbing alcohol?” I continued, as my embarrassment as well as the line behind me grew.

"Antiseptic?” She asked.

Dear Lord, thank you.

"Yes! Antiseptic…"

Made it home and there, on page 201 of my Lonely Planet phrasebook under “pharmacist” was the term I could have easily searched for – “antiseptikum."

Note to self – Keep Czech book in purse at all times…
