Dispatch from Hanoi

Yes, yes, yes, I know – it has been a while since my last post.

How cruel of me to inform you that I bought a motorcycle only to disappear for two weeks leaving you to wonder if I had perished on the side of the road, just another American MIA in Vietnam!  

Ahh, but if only you understood what I have been through in the last two weeks! How deep in the jungle I have journeyed! How many pitfalls and obstacles are hidden within the phrase From Saigon to Hanoi on a Minsk! How many times I avoided death! How many times I achieved the impossible! It was truly an indescribable experience, the best three weeks of my life!

For now, it will suffice to say that I made to Hanoi alive, but all my clothes are in tatters, I have a massive oozing burn on my right calf, my body is bruised and exhausted, my bank account is drained, my shoes are in the rubbish bin, and my bike…well, The Minsk is not with me anymore.

I am now in Hanoi, sipping strong coffee and attempting to express the indescribable as best as I can. But where to begin the story?

I look back now on where I left you, with the story of the quick ride from Saigon to Mui Ne and the overcoming of Challenges, One, Two and Three – oh, if only the remainder of the journey could have been so painless!

No, painless it was not. Not by any means. Ever.

It was, in fact, a disaster in some ways, a challenge in others, and an adventure throughout.

Let me start my story where I left off, on the second leg of the journey - from Mui Ne to Nha Trang.  Give me a few days to crank out the rest...
