Torah Hora
Shalom
This past weekend Jews celebrated the end of Sukkot and Simchat Torah. Simchat Torah is a joyous celebration marking the time when the Torah, Jewish Bible and Old Testament, is completed and started again. All the Torahs are taken from the Ark and carried around the pulpit seven times. This is the custom of making hakafot, from Hebrew meaning “going in circles.” Traditionally Simchat Torah is celebrated like a wedding because the Torah is like a bride for the Jewish people. The entire congregation sings and dances with the Torahs.
Tzfat, the Northern Israeli city and birth place of Kabbalah (Jewish mysticism) had especially vibrant Simchat Torah celebrations. Because Simchat Torah fell on Shabbat this year, photography was strictly prohibited until Saturday evening. All Friday evening and Saturday the local congregations took out the Torahs, made hakafot, danced, and sang. When Shabbat was finally out on Saturday evening I found two congregations celebrating Hakafot Sheniot or Second Hakafot. With work restrictions lifted the bands struck their chords, the singers hit their notes, and I got my photos.
