Trishaws are bicycle-powered carts for two people that are usually decked out with flowers, boom-boxes, and other personal memorabilia. Sight-see through town at this slow pace and you will not miss a thing! You will also provide business for the cyclists, whose clients are mostly tourists.

Must Do

I spent five months on exchange in Singapore back in 2006. It was the best time of my life. Why, you ask? Because I traveled outside of Singapore to the "real" SE Asia; Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, and Burma. Singapore is a nice, clean, westernized home-base from which you can venture out -- "Southeast Asia for beginners," as we called it. The rest of the continent is a mind-blowing, amazing new world, like nothing you knew before. If you study abroad in Singapore and don't see the rest of SE Asia, you're wasting your time. The best part, SE Asia is VERY student friendly, in terms of cost. The cost of living is 1/5 to 1/10 of what we're used to. So get out there and step outside your comfort zone!

In Singapore I volunteered at a children's orphanage sponsored by an Islamic organization called Jamiyah. I, along with two other students, were invited to a religious conference where many religions were represented by different leaders. The boys of the orphanage taught me the ceremonial drumming they did for the entrance of each religious leader as well as the entrance of the president of Singapore. But they forgot to teach me the proper Arabic greeting. Dressed in traditional attire, I was greeted in Arabic by an Islamic leader. I spoke no Arabic at the time and had no idea what he said until after the fact. What I did know was to just go with it. Salam wa aleikum!

Singaporeans have their own language called Singlish. This does not mean they do not speak English, but rather a mixture of English and whatever their spoken native language is (i.e. Chinese, Arabic, etc.). Practice the words la, las, li, and leh, and you will be sounding like a Singaporean in no time. The catch phrase I was known for was "yeah lah." This is used often within Singlish. Use this phrase and you'll surprise the locals!
