Flying High

As I got to the door I was physically shaking with fear and regret. The ride had been beautiful, but I was now starting to question my motives and my sanity. Legs out the door, the wind slaps me in the face. I blew a kiss to the camera, waved ... read more

Crazy Carl

I'm so in love. Not this puppy love nonsense, but that blissfully painful, butterflies-in-stomach, head over heels love. He's tall, dark and handsome. He's big and strong. I can snuggle up with him and feel safe at night. I've spent a lot of money on him, he loves a good ... read more

Happy Jamming

As the new year has come and gone, I find myself looking back on a prosperous 2009 and the promising future of 2010. I feel that my experiences around New Years Eve and New Years Day tend to set the theme for my upcoming year. Last year, for example, my ... read more

Children vs. Hangovers

Life has taken me through many twists and turns these last four months spent in New Zealand. Not that I was expecting anything different, just that being a total workaholic and constantly surrounded by children never seemed like a viable reality for me to take part of. Yet here I am. ... read more

Status: very happy.

About a week ago I woke up at 5:00 a.m. and hopped into the cab of an enormous truck with my Haydin's stepfather Hamish for a little road trip bound for Westport.  I don't know if any of you have ever been to Westport, located, shockingly, on the west coast of ... read more

Fear vs. Curiosity

I think there's definitely something to be said for Fear of the Unknown, even though I think its losing the battle.    One week ago, which seems like an eternity in itself, I left Asia to embark on yet another unknown adventure. As I have done many times before, I left ... read more

A little about the Land of the Long White Cloud

New Zealand is a unique fusion of ancient Polynesian culture mixed with British influences, as immigrants from the UK (England/Scotland/Wales) began coming over in the 1600s. You get a sense that the UK migration began as sort of an average ‘white man’s burden’ quest to Christianize the ‘backward’-ness of the ... read more

On "Keeping Up..."

Yes, the title of this blog is an homage to that 50s era expression of ‘Keeping up with the Jones’- that stereotypically perfectly functioning family that does it all, in order, and one step ahead of everyone else. I liked how the expression alliterated with ‘Kiwis,’ so voila, my blog ... read more

The old church in Dunedin offers dancing lessons every Wednesday night for those keen to learn some new moves. A fine goal, to be sure, for any guy new to the country. But be warned, for any man brave enough to rise to the challenge of dancing away the hour with a church full of sweaty-handed grannies, that you're in for a lesson in humility and perseverance. Those old grandmothers are not too tolerant if you don't nail the new move on the first try. Just be sure not to go to the intro-mediate lesson your first time (as I embarrassingly did)!

Traveling to New Zealand any time soon? Prepare your daypack and a backup plan before setting off for a tramp in the bush or a stroll on the beach! The weather can change in an instant on an island and New Zealand is no exception. A beautiful day with warm, blustery northwest winds can be spoiled if the wind changes direction. A southerly blowing off Antarctica can trigger frigid temperatures and rain or snow in minutes. So, when you take your stroll down the beach, locate the nearest cafe that has a hot chocolate and lolly cake ready to go in case a southerly blows in. And don't forget to throw a jacket in with your sunscreen and sandals.

If you're worried about anything, a Kiwi friend will reassure you, "She'll be right, mate." Your friend means that everything will be fine. Or, as their Aussie cousins might say, "No worries!"
