Gotta love that ammonium chloride candy

Looking back, I should have noticed my friend's smug smile as he offered me some Opals on the bumpy ride back to camp. After a long day of research around the Skeidararjokull Glacier, nothing looked more appealing than the little round candies that poured out of that striped box. But my unassuming taste buds were in for a surprise -- the black ovals were a far cry from the sugar-loaded licorice of America. Known as saltlakkrís, the chewy pastels contain ammonium chloride, giving them an intense salty flavor and giving me a very sour, very funny facial expression. Opal is one of many companies producing saltlakkrís and with its intriguing exterior, it's the ideal brand to share with unprepared mouths. Some grow to love it. I never did.

As a dime-sized dot in the Atlantic, Iceland has a weather system that changes on a dime. In the summer months, prepare to engage in a complex strip dance as layers come on and off with the shifting clouds. To battle the unpredictable climate, come armed with non-cotton layers and waterproof shells. Materials like fleece and wool are good insulators and dry quickly. If you plan to spend time exploring lava fields, chasing sheep, or gazing at glaciers in the Icelandic outback, waterproof jackets and pants are imperative. A warm hat and pair of gloves would also be ideal, as would lighter clothes for more temperate days. Though it may induce some packing anxiety, Iceland's mysterious weather adds to the intrigue of the dynamic landscapes.
