Bali and Lombok, Indonesia - land of beautiful blue sea and white beaches, giant volcanos, and motorbike accidents.

I spent the last two weeks of September 2009 traveling around Bali and Lombok in Indonesia. This area is absolutely lovely and I highly recommend it to anyone who has the time and money. It is a cheap destination with your average lodging costing between $6 and $15 and your ... read more

Torajan funerals are more of a celebratory than somber occasion. For example, no one seemed to be grieving at the funeral I attended for a husband and wife who had passed away within a month of each other. The family had saved up for ten months in order to have enough money to provide a worthy funeral, which included the sacrifice of 30 water buffalo and 200 pigs. A crowd of 200 gathered in a field to watch the funeral celebration, which culminated in a water buffalo fight. If you attend one of these ceremonies (which are usually open to the public), be sure to stay on your toes--the buffalo fights can get dangerous.

When traveling and sightseeing in Bali, Indonesia, like other sacred spaces in Southeast Asia, be certain to wear modest clothing. For women, this means clothes that cover the arms and legs--long-sleeved and light-weight cotton is always best. In any event, try not to make too much of a statement with your attire. If you can, find a prayer shawl that is worn around the waist (for women). Respect for the culture around you will grant you access into a world worth witnessing.
