I fell in love with the Russian language when I studied in Sankt Peterburg, Russia, as an undergraduate. Yearning to return to the former Soviet Union, I taught English as a foreign language as a Peace Corps volunteer in Uzbekistan. When I returned home, I taught composition and English at San José State University. I'm now a PhD student at the University of California, Davis, researching how immigrant high school students learn academic language and writing.
